In Saturday’s win over the Redbirds, Newman became the MVC’s new all-time career strikeouts leader with her seventh strikeout that put her at 1,087 in her outstanding career. That strikeout against also broke her own single-season Drake strikeout record with 287. Newman has a nation-best 292 strikeouts this season and in her career has 1,092 strikeouts. Her career total is the second-most among all active NCAA players in 2019. Newman has recorded 11 straight complete games where she has struck out 10 or more in each victory and overall has 17 games with 10 or more strikeouts this season. She is 20-6 with a 0.98 earned run average that ranks sixth in the nation and a league-leading five saves. Newman is allowing a national-low 2.85 hits per game while striking out a national-best 13 per game.
