first_imgThe Indian Olympic Association (IOA) will hold its elections on November 25 with the newly-appointed Indian Boxing Federation (IBF) chairman Abhay Chautala announcing his intentions to take on IOA secretary general Randhir Singh for the president’s post.It was expected that the elections would be pushed to November and the factions within the IOA would be working overtime to garner votes. Chautala’s appointment as IBF chairman is seen as one of the moves in the same direction. The IBF constitution was amended to accommodate Chautala, who had completed three terms as its president and was thus ineligible for another term as per the sports ministry’s guidelines. By becoming the chairman he has also ensured that he has a vote in the IOA. Chautala would have to contend with Randhir Singh, an influential figure in the IOC and the Olympic Council of Asia, for the president’s post.”It was a unanimous decision that I be made the chairman. I have been serving the boxing federation for a long time and there are people and sportspersons who would be looking up to me during the election. I don’t want to disappoint them by refusing the job, if given a chance,” said Chautala after the IOA general body meeting on Monday. The factions within the IOA have already begun to flex their muscles to woo officials. There is, however, still suspense over Suresh Kalmadi’s candidature even as the IOA chief has kept himself away from the functioning of the body for a few months.A recent High court ruling directed Kalmadi not to contest election. His faction is, however, still trying to find ways to bring him back to power again.”Chautala is the second choice after Kalmadi and there is a good possibility that he will be the one who will challenge Randhir for the top post,” said an IOA source. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) had directed the IOA to furnish the election date by Tuesday and also accept its demand for an observer to oversee the election. The IOA was earlier against the IOC sending an observer for its elections. But at its executive committee meeting on Monday, the IOA seemed to climb down from its stance and looks like ready to accept the world body’s directive. The IOA executive board decided on the election date and called the general body meeting on October 18 to finalise the electoral process. The IOC had also directed the IOA to ensure that the national sports federations, which send teams for the Olympics, are given majority of the voting rights.”The executive board has decided to set up a standing committee which will see to it that the NSFs have majority voting rights in the electoral college,” acting IOA president Vijay Kumar Malhotra said after the meeting.Malhotra said there were no discussions on the IOC’s demand to have an observer but he did indicate that the IOA would have no issue in accepting it. “We are not in conflict with the IOC and, in fact, we derive our strength from the IOC. We did write to the IOC asking why we are being singled out to have an international observer but if they do send one, it doesn’t matter,” he said. The case regarding the eligibility of the IOA office-bearers who wish to contest the election is scheduled to come up for hearing on October 15, and Malhotra said it was the reason why the general body meeting has been scheduled for October 18.Malhotra asserted that the body would be ready to challenge the verdict in a higher court if it does not get a favourable verdict.advertisementlast_img read more

first_imgNew Delhi, Aug 25 (PTI) Sports Minister Vijay Goel today said they would try that Prime Minister Narendra Modi attends the opening ceremony of the U-17 FIFA World Cup, indicating that plans to have the ceremony were firmly in place. FIFA does not have the tradition of organising opening ceremonies before the start of its events but Goel said they want to have one for the mega event, happening for the first time in the country. “We know that they (FIFA) dont do this but we will try to have Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the opening ceremony,” Goel told reporters after distributing footballs to slum kids as part of promotional activities for the World Cup. “I have inspected all venues and all are ready. PM had a role in it and he wants promotion of football in the country like cricket.” The trophy of the event was also put on display. Goel said it be great if the state governments also distribute footballs to the kids and promote the World Cup, starting October 6 across six venues in the country. “We will distribute 1000 footballs to (hosting) states to be given to kids and would love to see the states gift more to the kids,” Goel said. Goel said the tickets sale in Delhi for India matches might not be very encouraging at this stage but gradually it will pick up. “The popularity of football in other five states is more than Delhi. But I am sure you will see packed house when India will play,” he said. The Sports Minister said they will make efforts to ensure that school students in Delhi get to watch Indias matches for free and will discuss the same with authorities in other host cities. He was able to go from box to box and I want to use his quality. “His qualities are that he can give us good pressing, and he can win the ball high up the pitch to give us the possession to score. He did that tonight. “After, we need someone with the ball and in his position, he can help us with the build-up.” last_img read more

ASHGABAT, Turkmenistan — Russia has resumed buying natural gas from Turkmenistan, more than three years after cutting off purchases of the Central Asian country’s key export. The resumption was announced Monday by state natural gas company Turkmengaz. Russian state natural gas monopoly Gazprom confirmed the move, Russian news agencies said.No details were given about the amount of gas that Russia would buy. Prior to halting imports in 2016, Russia had been the largest customer for Turkmen gas, buying about 10 billion cubic meters a year.Russia’s purchase halt came amid a slump in global prices. The loss of exports to Russia was a significant blow to the Turkmen economy. The Associated Press

VIDEO: Message from Black Mamba Anti-Poaching Unit World Ranger Day takes place annually on 31 July to recognize the park rangers around the world who have been injured or killed in the line of duty. In the past year, at least 105 rangers were killed doing their job, according to the International Ranger Federation. The UN Environment Programme’s (UNEP) Wild For Life programme added its voice today to celebrate rangers’ work. Praising park rangers for facing an array of challenges, including natural disasters like avalanches and floods, Wild For Life called rangers “hands-on heroes.” “Fighting crime, educating the public, and protecting our heritage… all in a day’s work for the rangers that safeguard the earth’s most treasured locations,” the campaign said. It noted that in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, at least 140 rangers were killed in the past 15 years in the Virunga National Park. “Honest and hardworking park rangers devote their lives to protecting our natural resources and cultural heritage and, in some areas, these brave men and women regularly encounter well-resourced groups of poachers, equipped with high caliber weapons, who do not hesitate to use violence or threats of violence against them,” said John Scanlon, Secretary-General of the Secretariat of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). In recent years, rangers have increasingly been targeted by criminals seeking some of the world’s most iconic animal species, such as elephants and rhinos, and plants, such as rosewood. Mr. Scanlon added that the “illegal trade in wild animals and plants is occurring at a scale that threatens wildlife, people and their livelihoods” and is being driven by transnational organized crime groups and rebel militia groups, as well as rogue elements of regular military forces. “The dedication and commitment shown by these honest hard working park rangers on a daily basis is worthy of much greater public recognition,” Mr. Scanlon said, welcoming World Ranger Day which is marked by the international community but not by the UN specifically. read more

But it had only three days off before defending its home court again Thursday versus a strong Maryland team (14-4, 3-2 Big Ten) .Maryland and Ohio State have played three common opponents this season: Butler, Iowa and Michigan State. Maryland rolled both Butler (79-65) and Iowa (91-73), but was crushed by Michigan State 91-61. Ohio State lost to Butler 67-66 in overtime and beat Iowa 92-81. They are the No. 35 team, according to advanced statistics website KenPom.com, fueled mostly by a high-powered offense. KenPom lists their offense as the 36th-best offense in the nation and fourth-best in conference play. Maryland has been a strong shooting team from all areas on the court, shooting 37.9 percent from 3-point range and 54.9 percent from inside the arc. It is a challenging team to defend because it neither heavily relies on 3-point shooting nor interior play, deriving 29.3 percent of its offense from 3-pointers, 48.4 percent from inside and 22.3 percent from the charity stripe.Maryland has received this offensive production despite losing forwards Justin Jackson and Ian Bender, both expected to be key offensive contributors. As a result, the Terrapins had to go from running a traditional two-guard, two-forward, one-center lineup to starting three guards, a forward and a center.Guards Anthony Cowan Jr. and Kevin Huerter have stepped up and been the Terrapins’ two most prolific scorers and helped maintain a versatile offense that is capable of scoring from anywhere on the court.“They’re different in some ways because of the skill that they now can put on the floor and their shooting that they can spread you out with, which is impressive. You have several guys that are shooting upwards of 40-plus percent from the 3-point line,” Ohio State head coach Chris Holtmann said Wednesday. “The reality is those guys have played well in spite of having a couple of injuries.”The Terrapins have not been able to match the success on the other side of the court. Though they have the 46th-best adjusted defense overall, the Terrapins rank second-to-last in the conference in adjusted defense in Big Ten games, according to KenPom. Maryland has allowed a Big Ten-worst 58.5 adjusted field-goal percentage and 44.2 percent 3-point shooting. This bodes well for an Ohio State team that is No. 1 in conference play in offensive efficiency and effective field-goal percentage and second in 3-point shooting.Maryland also has had a problem with turnovers. It has the 309th-best turnover rate at 21.9 percent and has only forced 17.3 percent turnovers, 264th-best in the nation. This plays into the hands of Ohio State, which ranks No. 114 in offensive turnovers percentage (18.0 percent) and No. 109 in defensive turnovers forced percentage (20.1 percent).Maintaining MomentumMaryland is not the No. 1 team in the nation. The team is not even ranked. Ohio State faced a stiffer challenge than the Terrapins last Sunday and won convincingly. But the Terrapins are still one of the better teams in the conference, and riding the high of the Michigan State win, it’s easy to think the Buckeyes could play sluggishly and come into the game ill-prepared.Ohio State redshirt senior guard Kam Williams said the team went into practices prior to the Michigan State game with an “unbelievable intensity” and said this is not the time for the team to get complacent given the conference slate ahead of them.“The vibe before that [Michigan State] game was amazing, so we know we have to keep that consistent no matter who we have to play,” he said. “Like I said after the game, how we play has to be the standard in practice. It has to be the standard in every game with everything that we do. I feel like if we keep that up, that’s going to leave margin for error. So even if we do have like a lull in the game, we know what it takes now to get back to where we need to get to since we’ve proven that we’re capable of playing at a high level.”Holtmann added that a statement win like the team had against the Spartans puts a target on Ohio State’s back. Teams will not come into Columbus expecting to walk over the Buckeyes for an easy win, despite possibly being able to do so last year. Holtmann’s squad might have begun the season with expectations of being one of the doormats of the Big Ten, but now, just as conference play is ramping up, the Buckeyes will be faced with teams aiming to take down a now-intimidating Ohio State team.“There’s no question that, that’s just reality that teams are going to come with a different edge right now,” Holtmann said. “I think you try to make [the players] aware that there will be a different approach. It’s not like we’re nationally ranked or we have a number one by our name, but I think you do make them aware that it’s going to be different. It’s going to feel different.” read more

first_imgYou might have heard that earlier in the week, accused file sharer Jammie Thomas-Rasset was billed $1.5 million for downloading and distributing songs over Kazaa. The end bill? An astonishing $62,500 fine for each shared song. That bill’s been dropping a lot of jaws even from people who don’t closely follow file sharing cases, but is it — despite appearances — a true estimate of the damages caused by file sharing? Not according to a court in Germany, who has a dramatically more reasonable take on the matter. First, some history: back in October, the Hamburg Regional Court ruled on a case of a young man who shared a couple of songs on peer-to-peer networks back in 2006. Germany’s music publishers sued him, and he was found guilty. So far, everything’s the same between the two cases. However, in America, the jury ultimately decided to fine Thomas-Rassett for all the damages that could ever be racked up by sharing songs. On the other hand, the German court took a far more sensible approach to billing their guilty file-sharer: they decided to award damages that were identical to what it would have cost the file-sharer to license those songs to begin with, for the duration of the time they were shared. So what’s the end fine? A million? A few thousand? Nope: the end fine is just thirty euros, or about $42. It’s a fine so low it’s almost anticlimactic: the German teenager has been fighting this case for four years. It’s probably too low. Still, unlike the American cases against file sharers, at least the math is understandable to everyone. How great it would be if the American Courts would start awarding damages based on calculable, real-world figures instead of imaginary losses and the need to “send a clear message.”Read more at Torrent Freaklast_img read more

first_imgHollywood’s iron defense against those that would “steal” their property had offered several years of security. The HDMI system, complete with HDCP security had, been the seemingly impenetrable fortress that everyone had hoped and feared it would be. Until recently anyway, as the encryption had been broken in much the same way as had been originally hypothesized by Princeton University’s Ed Felten back in 2006. It’s been just about a month since the hack has been discovered, and strangely enough, neither HDMI, Intel, or Hollywood has made much of a fuss about it. Recently, I was able to sit down with a representative from HDMI, and I just had to ask!At the recently passed CES pre-press event in NYC, HDMI Licensing LLC. was among the many presenters touting this years newest in goodies that are featuring their technology. When asked if the company was at all concerned about the hack, I was met with a shrug and a simple:Well, that’s really Intel’s problem, not ours. They are the ones who maintain and implement that standard. While not exactly an answer I was looking for, he continued, stating that the only reason Intel or HDMI would become concerned was in the instance that Hollywood became concerned. He furthered his lack of concern when he insisted that “specialized, home made hardware” would be needed to take advantage of the hack, not something that people would be buying in stores, like a dual tape VCR.I thanked them for their time, but walked away stunned at the misunderstanding. Specialized hardware? It seems to me that any video card with 1GB of RAM and a decent sized hard drive would be able to fully take advantage of such a hack, and those things aren’t even remotely hard to find. The HDMI rep was unable to speculate as to whether or not the hack would slow down the proposed plan to release certain movies straight to some sort of On Demand system once they left the theatre, but if the guys in Hollywood are as blissfully ignorant as the team at HDMI, I expect the pirates of the world would be very happy to see such a system implemented.last_img read more

Le 11 avril 2013 à 11:35 • Maxime Lambertlast_img read more

first_img Tags Gaming Security Share your voice Comment Think of access tokens as authentication outside of passwords — they’re codes generated by platforms to keep you logged in so you don’t need to log in every time you visit a page. When hackers stole personal information on 29 million people on Facebook, they used access tokens to do it. The Fortnite vulnerability takes advantage of the many different ways you can log into your Epic Games account, using access tokens from Facebook, Google and Xbox accounts.   The attacker would have to send the phishing link on the platform the victim logs into Fortnite from — so if you tied your Epic Games’ account to Facebook, the hack would have to go through the social network, said Eran Vaknin, a security researcher at Check Point.Once you click on the link, that data is extracted, even if the victim doesn’t type anything in. “The attack is happening automatically without any user interference,” Vaknin said. Because the compromised page had an Epic Games’ URL, it would appear less suspicious to victims, Vanunu said. It’s similar to a vulnerability that Check Point’s researchers discovered with accounts for DJI’s drones last March, which the company fixed in September. In that vulnerability, Vanunu was also able to inject malicious code on DJI’s own domain page to steal access tokens. “Even if you have a security product looking for anti-phishing, it wouldn’t catch it because it’s coming from a legitimate domain,” the security researcher said. He warned that as people become more aware of phishing attacks and more careful about typing passwords on suspicious pages, hackers would be targeting access tokens instead. Vanunu encouraged enabling two-factor authentication to protect your accounts — which Epic Games has made efforts to promote as well. “Token hijacking is something that is happening on all major platforms,” Vanunu said. “We are starting to see malicious attackers looking for tokens more.” Security: Stay up-to-date on the latest in breaches, hacks, fixes and all those cybersecurity issues that keep you up at night. Security researchers from Check Point found vulnerabilities with Epic Games’ website, which allowed potential hackers to log into people’s Fortnite accounts without needing a password. Once they had access to the compromised accounts, the researchers found that you could listen in on friends’ conversations and use the victims’ credit card information to purchase in-game items. The researchers discovered the vulnerabilities in November, and it was fixed by January. “We were made aware of the vulnerabilities and they were soon addressed. We thank Check Point for bringing this to our attention. As always, we encourage players to protect their accounts by not reusing passwords and using strong passwords, and not sharing account information with others,” an Epic Games spokesperson said. Fortnite had a breakthrough year in 2018, with nearly 80 million players. Its parent company, Epic Games, was estimated to profit $3 billion last year, and valued at more than $15 billion for the free game. With the game’s massive popularity comes security concerns. In August, Epic Games fixed a security flaw with its installer for Android devices, after researchers from Google disclosed a vulnerability that could have tricked victims into installing a fake version of the game. Because the game is so popular, security researchers have found that Fortnite is a major target of malware, with a surge of fake apps popping up online. “We started to hear there was a lot of abuse at Fortnite’s network,” said Oded Vanunu, Check Point’s head of products vulnerability research. “This is more than a game — this is a huge infrastructure that’s serving 80 million players, who are mostly kids.” Epic Games has attempted to address security concerns by encouraging its players to enable two-factor authentication through giveaways.  Despite Fortnite’s security measures over the last year, it was an Epic Games page from 2004 that created a small opening for hackers to take over people’s accounts. Check Point’s researchers found an unsecured URL from over a decade ago, on ut2004stats.epicgames.com — a records page for Unreal Tournament, a first-person shooter that Epic Games first developed in 1998. The page, which has since been deactivated, was open to cross-site scripting attacks — when someone injects malicious code into a website. The researchers wrote code and injected it onto the webpage to redirect access tokens to Check Point’s servers instead of Epic Game’s. last_img read more
