They encourage viewers to donate to support careful mentor matching and ongoing support for volunteers, kids and families and emphasize that the greatest volunteer need is for male mentors, since most youth waiting for “Bigs” are boys. In addition, there’s an invitation for Big Brothers Big Sisters alumni to “Start Something [again]” to change the odds for children who face adversity.“Comcast’s generous donation of air time allows us to show and tell millions of cable viewers that by supporting Big Brothers Big Sisters, they can change the odds for children and families in their own communities,” said Big Brothers Big Sisters of America President and CEO Charles Pierson. “With support from Jamie Foxx and other celebrity partners, we expect the new PSAs to help us attract new support and grow our alumni network so we can increase our capacity to serve more children who face adversity.”Donated airtime from Comcast is part of the company’s national investment in Big Brothers Big Sisters that started in 2008 and exceeds $40 million. ASHGABAT, Turkmenistan — Russia has resumed buying natural gas from Turkmenistan, more than three years after cutting off purchases of the Central Asian country’s key export. The resumption was announced Monday by state natural gas company Turkmengaz. Russian state natural gas monopoly Gazprom confirmed the move, Russian news agencies said.No details were given about the amount of gas that Russia would buy. Prior to halting imports in 2016, Russia had been the largest customer for Turkmen gas, buying about 10 billion cubic meters a year.Russia’s purchase halt came amid a slump in global prices. The loss of exports to Russia was a significant blow to the Turkmen economy. The Associated Press

VIDEO: Message from Black Mamba Anti-Poaching Unit World Ranger Day takes place annually on 31 July to recognize the park rangers around the world who have been injured or killed in the line of duty. In the past year, at least 105 rangers were killed doing their job, according to the International Ranger Federation. The UN Environment Programme’s (UNEP) Wild For Life programme added its voice today to celebrate rangers’ work. Praising park rangers for facing an array of challenges, including natural disasters like avalanches and floods, Wild For Life called rangers “hands-on heroes.” “Fighting crime, educating the public, and protecting our heritage… all in a day’s work for the rangers that safeguard the earth’s most treasured locations,” the campaign said. It noted that in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, at least 140 rangers were killed in the past 15 years in the Virunga National Park. “Honest and hardworking park rangers devote their lives to protecting our natural resources and cultural heritage and, in some areas, these brave men and women regularly encounter well-resourced groups of poachers, equipped with high caliber weapons, who do not hesitate to use violence or threats of violence against them,” said John Scanlon, Secretary-General of the Secretariat of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). In recent years, rangers have increasingly been targeted by criminals seeking some of the world’s most iconic animal species, such as elephants and rhinos, and plants, such as rosewood. Mr. Scanlon added that the “illegal trade in wild animals and plants is occurring at a scale that threatens wildlife, people and their livelihoods” and is being driven by transnational organized crime groups and rebel militia groups, as well as rogue elements of regular military forces. “The dedication and commitment shown by these honest hard working park rangers on a daily basis is worthy of much greater public recognition,” Mr. Scanlon said, welcoming World Ranger Day which is marked by the international community but not by the UN specifically. read more

But it had only three days off before defending its home court again Thursday versus a strong Maryland team (14-4, 3-2 Big Ten) .Maryland and Ohio State have played three common opponents this season: Butler, Iowa and Michigan State. Maryland rolled both Butler (79-65) and Iowa (91-73), but was crushed by Michigan State 91-61. Ohio State lost to Butler 67-66 in overtime and beat Iowa 92-81. They are the No. 35 team, according to advanced statistics website KenPom.com, fueled mostly by a high-powered offense. KenPom lists their offense as the 36th-best offense in the nation and fourth-best in conference play. Maryland has been a strong shooting team from all areas on the court, shooting 37.9 percent from 3-point range and 54.9 percent from inside the arc. It is a challenging team to defend because it neither heavily relies on 3-point shooting nor interior play, deriving 29.3 percent of its offense from 3-pointers, 48.4 percent from inside and 22.3 percent from the charity stripe.Maryland has received this offensive production despite losing forwards Justin Jackson and Ian Bender, both expected to be key offensive contributors. As a result, the Terrapins had to go from running a traditional two-guard, two-forward, one-center lineup to starting three guards, a forward and a center.Guards Anthony Cowan Jr. and Kevin Huerter have stepped up and been the Terrapins’ two most prolific scorers and helped maintain a versatile offense that is capable of scoring from anywhere on the court.“They’re different in some ways because of the skill that they now can put on the floor and their shooting that they can spread you out with, which is impressive. You have several guys that are shooting upwards of 40-plus percent from the 3-point line,” Ohio State head coach Chris Holtmann said Wednesday. “The reality is those guys have played well in spite of having a couple of injuries.”The Terrapins have not been able to match the success on the other side of the court. Though they have the 46th-best adjusted defense overall, the Terrapins rank second-to-last in the conference in adjusted defense in Big Ten games, according to KenPom. Maryland has allowed a Big Ten-worst 58.5 adjusted field-goal percentage and 44.2 percent 3-point shooting. This bodes well for an Ohio State team that is No. 1 in conference play in offensive efficiency and effective field-goal percentage and second in 3-point shooting.Maryland also has had a problem with turnovers. It has the 309th-best turnover rate at 21.9 percent and has only forced 17.3 percent turnovers, 264th-best in the nation. This plays into the hands of Ohio State, which ranks No. 114 in offensive turnovers percentage (18.0 percent) and No. 109 in defensive turnovers forced percentage (20.1 percent).Maintaining MomentumMaryland is not the No. 1 team in the nation. The team is not even ranked. Ohio State faced a stiffer challenge than the Terrapins last Sunday and won convincingly. But the Terrapins are still one of the better teams in the conference, and riding the high of the Michigan State win, it’s easy to think the Buckeyes could play sluggishly and come into the game ill-prepared.Ohio State redshirt senior guard Kam Williams said the team went into practices prior to the Michigan State game with an “unbelievable intensity” and said this is not the time for the team to get complacent given the conference slate ahead of them.“The vibe before that [Michigan State] game was amazing, so we know we have to keep that consistent no matter who we have to play,” he said. “Like I said after the game, how we play has to be the standard in practice. It has to be the standard in every game with everything that we do. I feel like if we keep that up, that’s going to leave margin for error. So even if we do have like a lull in the game, we know what it takes now to get back to where we need to get to since we’ve proven that we’re capable of playing at a high level.”Holtmann added that a statement win like the team had against the Spartans puts a target on Ohio State’s back. Teams will not come into Columbus expecting to walk over the Buckeyes for an easy win, despite possibly being able to do so last year. Holtmann’s squad might have begun the season with expectations of being one of the doormats of the Big Ten, but now, just as conference play is ramping up, the Buckeyes will be faced with teams aiming to take down a now-intimidating Ohio State team.“There’s no question that, that’s just reality that teams are going to come with a different edge right now,” Holtmann said. “I think you try to make [the players] aware that there will be a different approach. It’s not like we’re nationally ranked or we have a number one by our name, but I think you do make them aware that it’s going to be different. It’s going to feel different.” read more

first_imgYou might have heard that earlier in the week, accused file sharer Jammie Thomas-Rasset was billed $1.5 million for downloading and distributing songs over Kazaa. The end bill? An astonishing $62,500 fine for each shared song. That bill’s been dropping a lot of jaws even from people who don’t closely follow file sharing cases, but is it — despite appearances — a true estimate of the damages caused by file sharing? Not according to a court in Germany, who has a dramatically more reasonable take on the matter. First, some history: back in October, the Hamburg Regional Court ruled on a case of a young man who shared a couple of songs on peer-to-peer networks back in 2006. Germany’s music publishers sued him, and he was found guilty. So far, everything’s the same between the two cases. However, in America, the jury ultimately decided to fine Thomas-Rassett for all the damages that could ever be racked up by sharing songs. On the other hand, the German court took a far more sensible approach to billing their guilty file-sharer: they decided to award damages that were identical to what it would have cost the file-sharer to license those songs to begin with, for the duration of the time they were shared. So what’s the end fine? A million? A few thousand? Nope: the end fine is just thirty euros, or about $42. It’s a fine so low it’s almost anticlimactic: the German teenager has been fighting this case for four years. It’s probably too low. Still, unlike the American cases against file sharers, at least the math is understandable to everyone. How great it would be if the American Courts would start awarding damages based on calculable, real-world figures instead of imaginary losses and the need to “send a clear message.”Read more at Torrent Freaklast_img read more

first_imgHollywood’s iron defense against those that would “steal” their property had offered several years of security. The HDMI system, complete with HDCP security had, been the seemingly impenetrable fortress that everyone had hoped and feared it would be. Until recently anyway, as the encryption had been broken in much the same way as had been originally hypothesized by Princeton University’s Ed Felten back in 2006. It’s been just about a month since the hack has been discovered, and strangely enough, neither HDMI, Intel, or Hollywood has made much of a fuss about it. Recently, I was able to sit down with a representative from HDMI, and I just had to ask!At the recently passed CES pre-press event in NYC, HDMI Licensing LLC. was among the many presenters touting this years newest in goodies that are featuring their technology. When asked if the company was at all concerned about the hack, I was met with a shrug and a simple:Well, that’s really Intel’s problem, not ours. They are the ones who maintain and implement that standard. While not exactly an answer I was looking for, he continued, stating that the only reason Intel or HDMI would become concerned was in the instance that Hollywood became concerned. He furthered his lack of concern when he insisted that “specialized, home made hardware” would be needed to take advantage of the hack, not something that people would be buying in stores, like a dual tape VCR.I thanked them for their time, but walked away stunned at the misunderstanding. Specialized hardware? It seems to me that any video card with 1GB of RAM and a decent sized hard drive would be able to fully take advantage of such a hack, and those things aren’t even remotely hard to find. The HDMI rep was unable to speculate as to whether or not the hack would slow down the proposed plan to release certain movies straight to some sort of On Demand system once they left the theatre, but if the guys in Hollywood are as blissfully ignorant as the team at HDMI, I expect the pirates of the world would be very happy to see such a system implemented.last_img read more

When hackers stole personal information on 29 million people on Facebook, they used access tokens to do it. The Fortnite vulnerability takes advantage of the many different ways you can log into your Epic Games account, using access tokens from Facebook, Google and Xbox accounts.   The attacker would have to send the phishing link on the platform the victim logs into Fortnite from — so if you tied your Epic Games’ account to Facebook, the hack would have to go through the social network, said Eran Vaknin, a security researcher at Check Point.Once you click on the link, that data is extracted, even if the victim doesn’t type anything in. “The attack is happening automatically without any user interference,” Vaknin said. Because the compromised page had an Epic Games’ URL, it would appear less suspicious to victims, Vanunu said. It’s similar to a vulnerability that Check Point’s researchers discovered with accounts for DJI’s drones last March, which the company fixed in September. In that vulnerability, Vanunu was also able to inject malicious code on DJI’s own domain page to steal access tokens. “Even if you have a security product looking for anti-phishing, it wouldn’t catch it because it’s coming from a legitimate domain,” the security researcher said. He warned that as people become more aware of phishing attacks and more careful about typing passwords on suspicious pages, hackers would be targeting access tokens instead. Vanunu encouraged enabling two-factor authentication to protect your accounts — which Epic Games has made efforts to promote as well. “Token hijacking is something that is happening on all major platforms,” Vanunu said. “We are starting to see malicious attackers looking for tokens more.” Security: Stay up-to-date on the latest in breaches, hacks, fixes and all those cybersecurity issues that keep you up at night. Blockchain Decoded: CNET looks at the tech powering bitcoin — and soon, too, a myriad services that will change your life. 1 Security researchers found a vulnerability that hackers could use to take over Fortnite accounts.  Epic Games Attention all epic Fortnite gamers: your accounts were in great danger. Security researchers from Check Point found vulnerabilities with Epic Games’ website, which allowed potential hackers to log into people’s Fortnite accounts without needing a password. Once they had access to the compromised accounts, the researchers found that you could listen in on friends’ conversations and use the victims’ credit card information to purchase in-game items. The researchers discovered the vulnerabilities in November, and it was fixed by January. “We were made aware of the vulnerabilities and they were soon addressed. We thank Check Point for bringing this to our attention. As always, we encourage players to protect their accounts by not reusing passwords and using strong passwords, and not sharing account information with others,” an Epic Games spokesperson said. Fortnite had a breakthrough year in 2018, with nearly 80 million players. Its parent company, Epic Games, was estimated to profit $3 billion last year, and valued at more than $15 billion for the free game. With the game’s massive popularity comes security concerns. In August, Epic Games fixed a security flaw with its installer for Android devices, after researchers from Google disclosed a vulnerability that could have tricked victims into installing a fake version of the game. Because the game is so popular, security researchers have found that Fortnite is a major target of malware, with a surge of fake apps popping up online. “We started to hear there was a lot of abuse at Fortnite’s network,” said Oded Vanunu, Check Point’s head of products vulnerability research. “This is more than a game — this is a huge infrastructure that’s serving 80 million players, who are mostly kids.” Epic Games has attempted to address security concerns by encouraging its players to enable two-factor authentication through giveaways.  Despite Fortnite’s security measures over the last year, it was an Epic Games page from 2004 that created a small opening for hackers to take over people’s accounts. Check Point’s researchers found an unsecured URL from over a decade ago, on ut2004stats.epicgames.com — a records page for Unreal Tournament, a first-person shooter that Epic Games first developed in 1998. The page, which has since been deactivated, was open to cross-site scripting attacks — when someone injects malicious code into a website. The researchers wrote code and injected it onto the webpage to redirect access tokens to Check Point’s servers instead of Epic Game’s. last_img read more

first_img Free Workshop | August 28: Get Better Engagement and Build Trust With Customers Now Enroll Now for Free When we talk about the location of your ads, we don’t mean where they appear on each page. What we’re emphasizing here is that there are methods of setting up AdSense ads to appear on pages other than your own website pages. Increasing the variety of pages you put AdSense ads on can really boost your click-through rate. We’ll also tell you about the kind of website page on which to never let an AdSense ad appear.Extend your reach with AdLinks. When you sign up for AdSense, you also have the opportunity to display AdLinks. These are text links that take your visitor to a page of AdSense ads when clicked. The text links are related to the topics on your site, just like AdSense ads, but you get more of them and they might cover a wider range of relevant topics. If space on your site is limited, AdLinks are a terrific idea because they’re much more compact than AdSense ads. The downside is it takes two clicks (one on the text link and one on the resulting ad) before you make any money from them.Put AdSense ads in RSS feeds. If you have more than 100 subscribers to your RSS feed, you can apply to have AdSense ads appear whenever the feed is pulled by a news reader. The ads are matched by the content of the entire feed, not just the title and teaser. You need to put a snippet of code, provided by Google, into your feed, and the ads are then rendered when a reader downloads your feed. The text-based AdSense ad is converted to a graphic that remains stable even after it’s downloaded by the reader. (If the ad remained in text form, the news reader would detect a new article each time the ad changed and would reload it.)Use Web Search on your site. Putting a Google Web Search box on your site adds functionality for your visitors and potential ad revenue for you. When your site visitors search, Google places ads directly related to their search topics on the results page. This has two benefits for you: You keep traffic on your site longer because visitors don’t have to leave to do a Google search; and, of course, you make money when they click on one of the related ads.Keep your sales pages for your own sales. Do not place AdSense ads on any web page designed to sell your visitors your product. This includes your salesletter as well as any page on which they can make a purchase. You’ll make a lot more money by having your customers buy your product than by having them click away on an AdSense ad. Don’t mix the messages by giving them more than one thing to “buy.”Keep the AdSense ads on your content and news pages, add them to your newsletter archive pages, but don’t put them on your sales pages.Follow the MoneyThe amount of money you make from AdSense ads is partly determined by the value of the keywords in the ads–in other words, how much advertisers have paid to use those keywords. Try to attract the big-money ads to your site by generating content that includes those high-paying keywords.Find the expensive words… If you’ve signed up for Google’s AdWords program, then you already have some resources to help you determine the cost of different keywords. For the rest of us, a bit of detective work is necessary.Start with Google itself. Do a Google search using the keywords you want to use on your site. Pay attention to the wording of the ads that show up in the right margin–the ads at the top have the higher-paying words in them. You can piggyback on the ad revenue for those words by using them in your site’s content. You can also find the pricey keywords by tapping into keyword databases. Try these three:www.bestfreekeywords.comwww.factsaboutadsense.comwww.toppayingkeywords.com…But not at the expense of your credibility. It might be tempting to create all your content around certain high-paying keywords just to benefit from the click-through payments. However, your visitors are savvy enough to know when they’re being manipulated, and they won’t tolerate it.If your content ceases to be useful, relevant or interesting to them, they’ll stop coming to your site entirely. And you’ll have lost not only the high-paying click-throughs, but also the bigger money from product sales.Final ThoughtsThe only criteria Google has for ad placement is relevant content, so AdSense puts your site on an equal footing with much bigger, “more valuable” sites. It’s not your bank balance that competes with the big guys for ad revenue but the quality of your content.Google doesn’t actually reveal how much you can make from running AdSense ads on your site–and other site owners are restricted in how much information they can release to the public. Therefore, specific numbers are hard to predict. It’s safe to say, though, that with almost no effort it’s possible to bring in a little money, and if you apply yourself, it’s possible to make a bundle!Derek Gehl is Entrepreneur.com’s “E-Business” columnist and the CEO of the Internet Marketing Center, an internet marketing firm that has helped thousands of people learn to start and run their own online businesses. Want to make some quick money with almost no work? If you don’t already have AdSense ads on your site, you should think about getting started.Google’s AdSense places contextual ads on your web pages, and keywords defined by advertisers are matched to your site’s content by Google. You make money each time someone on your site clicks on one of the ads. You can set filters so your competitors’ ads aren’t displayed on your site, and you can restrict the ad content by region and language. This article will point out a few ways you can manage the ads on your website so they make you more money. We’ll talk about three key issues: ad design, ad location and keywords. You’ll be surprised to learn just how much control you have over these elements–and you’ll be delighted to see how much more money a few small changes can make you.Designing for DollarsYes, “content is king,” but good design is the crown jewel. Spend a few minutes getting the look of your AdSense ads right, and the payoff to you is priceless.Tweak the color. Make the ads blend into your content so they’ll be perceived by visitors to your site as supplementary or supporting information. Visitors are much more likely to click on links that look like part of the content they’re reading. You can change the color of the background and the color of the links to match those on your web pages. There are two ways to do this. One is a cinch: Use the pre-formatted colors that Google offers. The other requires a bit of HTML knowledge: Hand code the colors so you get an exact match to the ones on your site.As an alternative design plan, consider changing the colors from time to time to keep things fresh for returning visitors who might suffer from “ad blindness”–viewers often automatically filter out any content they’ve seen before.Align the images. Use images on your site as “captions” for the AdSense ads that appear. Now, of course, they won’t have a direct relationship to each ad because you don’t know exactly which ads will be placed on your page. The purpose of the images isn’t to explain the ads, but to draw the eye and then lead it down or across to the text. Since that text is your ad, the image has just increased the chances that the ad will be clicked. If you try this strategy, be aware that Google’s algorithm is always looking for ways to get your ads to make you more money, and that could mean it might override your default settings. If you’ve asked for a four-ad banner, but Google knows that three ads will make you more money because of its keywords, then the images you’ve carefully aligned for four ads will be out of whack.Run from the border! Unless… Borders separate the ads from the content. This visual separation works against your careful attempts to integrate the ads with the content. (Remember: Your goal is to integrate the ads as much as possible so they appear to be just one more valuable piece of relevant content on your site.)For that reason, you should not use any of the pre-set borders Google gives you.But if you use the “image caption” trick described above, Google requires that you use a border or a line separation between the images and the ads. The solution is to create your own line separation that’s consistent with other design elements on your page. Location, Location, Location! 8 min readlast_img read more

first_imgBy Evie AndreouHOSPITALS will continue to operate during the 12-hour strike that the nurses union PASYNO announced for Monday and Tuesday, the health ministry said on Friday.PASYNO said it will stage the strike due to hospital understaffing, lack of information as regards the announced hospital autonomy and the government’s delay in commencing a dialogue with the union as regards the equation of nursing school qualifications with university degrees. The union, which counts more than 1,300 members – around half the state hospitals’ nursing staff – had announced earlier in the month it would join the strike announced by PASYDY’s nursing branch out of solidarity, but called it off after the latter decided not to go through with it following a meeting with Health minister Giorgos Pamporidis.PASYNO board member Christos Christodoulou told the Cyprus Mail the strike will mainly affect the Paphos, Limassol, Paralimni and Nicosia’s Makarion hospitals, as most of the nursing staff there are members of the specific union. He added that the strike will affect scheduled appointments and surgeries.“We will leave no urgent cases unattended, though,” Christodoulou said. He added that ‘safety groups’ have been designated to attend urgent cases.Christodoulou said that as regards the recognition of degrees of the nursing staff as being of university level, the union at the moment does not demand the salary upgrades that go with it but the commencement of a procedure to discuss this and other relevant issues.“Our duties, for instance. At the moment our job description says ‘general duties’, which is so vague,” he said.Health ministry spokesperson Maria Lantidou told the Cyprus Mail that during the strikes all ICUs and dialysis units will operate properly. She added that actions have been taken aiming to deal with any problems that may arise. You May LikeInsured Nation – Auto Insurance QuotesNew Rule in Rowland Heights, California Leaves Drivers FumingInsured Nation – Auto Insurance QuotesUndoPopularEverythingColorado Mom Adopted Two Children, Months Later She Learned Who They Really ArePopularEverythingUndoIcePopMan Notices A Strange Hole In This Lake, So He Gets A Drone, Flies It Inside And Captures ThisIcePopUndo Concern over falling tourism numbersUndoTurkish Cypriot actions in Varosha ‘a clear violation’ of UN resolutions, Nicosia saysUndoPensioner dies after crash on Paphos-Polis roadUndoby Taboolaby Taboolalast_img read more

first_imgWorkers at the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) will over the coming days take a series of votes to authorise – or not – their trade unions to take industrial action, including possible strikes, over three main grievances. The meetings and secret ballots will be taking place until May 30.The workers’ first grievance has to do with their contributions (deductions) for the national health scheme Gesy.Currently, and as of March this year, EAC staff contribute 1.85 per cent of their salary to the Health Insurance Organisation for the purposes of Gesy. This contribution is to go up to 2.90 per cent in June 2020, when Gesy is to be fully deployed. At the same time, the workers are opposed to the planned phasing out of their health plan with the EAC, and want it kept in place. Their present plan affords them access to services from the private healthcare sector.Their second gripe relates to the government’s decision to suspend compensation, in the form of backpay, following the administrative court’s recent decision that declared invalid benefits and salary cuts implemented in the broader public sector in 2012.The ruling also meant that the affected individuals were entitled to immediate compensation for what they lost since 2012.But the state is appealing that court decision, and wants to freeze the payment of any such compensation until a final judgment is delivered by the supreme court.EAC workers want the compensation to be paid to them now.Lastly, the syndicates are against a decision by the energy regulator that would force the EAC to tap its own reserves to pay for the leasing of mobile electricity generation units. The mobile units are to be used for the summer of 2020 (June to September) as a contingency to prevent possible blackouts from energy spike usage. The cost of leasing the units is estimated at between €30m to €50m. If the EAC’s reserves are not tapped, this extra expenditure would have to be transferred to customers. You May LikePopularEverythingColorado Mom Adopted Two Children, Months Later She Learned Who They Really ArePopularEverythingUndoLivestlyChip And Joanna’s $18M Mansion Is Perfect, But It’s The Backyard Everyone Is Talking AboutLivestlyUndoModernizeIf Your Home Has Old Roofing, Read ThisModernizeUndo Pensioner dies after crash on Paphos-Polis roadUndoCypriot tycoon launches ‘Bank of Cannabis’UndoThree arrested in connection with hotel theftsUndoby Taboolaby Taboolalast_img read more
