A newly constructed US$100,000 Ben Town School in Marshall City, Margibi County was, during the weekend, given 466 armed chairs and tables to start academic work.During the presentation of the chairs and tables, the president and members of the Rotary Club of Monrovia promised to build housing units for teachers and a library and play-ground for students.Funds for the construction of the Ben Town School were provided by the Rotary Club of Reston, Virginia, USA, and managed by the Rotary Club of Monrovia.According to Mr. Milton A. Weeks, president of the Rotary Club of Monrovia, the Ben Town School is situated in the middle of six towns without access to schools, clinics and safe drinking water.“Prior to the construction of the school, the Rotary Club of Monrovia constructed several hand pumps in the perimeters of these six towns in Marshall,” Rotarian Weeks explained. He said the Ben Town area was selected based on the fact its only operational school at the time had its students in a single mat house and they sat on the floor. The Rotary Club president affirmed his organization’s belief in the fundamental principle of providing an enabling environment for better academic activities.Highlighting contributions made to water and sanitation, Mr. Weeks gave details about latrines and water wells for three villages in the community of Ben Town and other communities in Saclapea, Nimba County that were built thanks to the Rotary Club’s efforts. He said in total the Rotary Club of Monrovia provided funding for the construction of 40 water wells and hand pumps throughout various communities in the country. As part of its commitment to the health sector, the Rotary Club of Monrovia has grants for the Polio-plus eradication initiative for 25,000 children in the country. The Rotary Club has also teamed up with Mercy Ship Africa for specialized surgical procedures and delivery of medicine through the provision of a grant for US$304,000.00.He further intimated that the Rotary Club of Monrovia has provided a container of toys, stools, and supplies for the Pediatric Ward at the John F. Kennedy Medical Center in Sinkor, Monrovia. The Rotary Club of Monrovia boss also disclosed that the charity provided a container of food and medical supplies to the Redemption Hospital in Bushrod Island. He furthered that the Rotary Club of Monrovia has, among other contributions, provided a 12kva generator and furniture to the Kings’ Orphanage in Mount Barclay, lower Montserrado County. Also commenting on his organization’s socio-economic initiatives, Rotarian Weeks said that the Rotary Club of Monrovia has provided US$25,000.00 funding for a micro-credit program implemented by the Foundation For Women (FFW) in Liberia. In closing, Rotary president Weeks detailed the activities of a health fair organized with the proposed Rotary Clubs of Gbarnga and Phebe Hospital to conduct eye tests, dental check-ups and reading glasses to communities in Bong County. WESTLAKE VILLAGE – Whether it was Kirsten DiPippo’s first-half ejection or the play of Thousand Oaks junior goalkeeper Laura Brain, Westlake was left seeing red Thursday night. As a result, the Warriors’ run in the Southern Section Div. II girls’ soccer playoffs met an untimely stop sign. Megan Meyer buried a 30-yard shot in the 24th minute and Brain recorded seven saves for her sixth consecutive shutout to lead the visting Lancers to a 1-0 quarterfinal victory. “That was amazing,” said Brain, sporting a red goalkeeper uniform. “That was a game of a lifetime.” It quickly became a game to forget for Westlake (12-3-8), the lone wild-card entry left in the quarterfinals, after the Warriors were forced to play more than 50 minutes with only 10 players after DiPippo was issued a red card for an apparent use of profanity. Westlake still controlled the run of play in the second half, but Kate Edwards and Kylie McDonald couldn’t escape double- and triple-teams to net the equalizer. “You hate to see it come to an end like that,” Westlake coach Frank Marino said. “But they gave 100 percent effort … it’s maybe the most proud I’ve been in my seven years here.” Meyer’s goal, set up by Jennifer Arauz, lifted Thousand Oaks (21-4-3) to its second semifinal berth in three years. “It seems like they had this curse over us,” said Meyer, who helped snap the Lancers’ seven-game winless streak against Westlake. “It feels so good to get this thing off our chest.” Said Lancers coach Geoff Raives: “If we didn’t play Westlake, it wouldn’t have been the same. We knew we had to go through them to make this season complete.” 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Please try again.subscribeCongratulations!
