Zinio’s new online global newsstand offers about 870 digital consumer titles in more than 200 countries from 350 publishers. It also gives consumers the option of using Zinio’s proprietary reader service or downloading the digital edition directly once they’ve registered with the store. “Consumers can read it, archive it, download it, etc.,” says Zinio president Rich Maggiotto. “That decision was made primarily from user feedback. It started off mostly from our textbook initiative, where students wanted to read textbooks on multiple screens. We’ve always focused putting the choice with the publishers, and we realized we should put choice in consumers’ hands too.”Pricing for the digital newsstand (which can be audited by ABC and BPA) is set by the publishers and Zinio will enable them to conduct multiple testing offers at one time. Digital single copies are priced the same as the physical newsstand while digital subscriptions tend to cost slightly less than the print subscriptions, according to Maggiotto. While he wouldn’t reveal specifics, Maggiotto says there are two pricing components for publishers, including a commission on what’s sold over the digital newsstand and payment for fulfilling orders. “We’re acting kind of like a digital U.S. Postal Service,” says Maggiotto. “There’s nothing up front they have to worry about it, it’s about getting paid for the actual delivery of that content.” Zinio sees about 55 percent of its existing customers from overseas and has also teamed with Accesso Group, a division of Havas Media, in order to expand the number of titles on the newsstand to more than 2,000 this year.
Tags Gaming Security Share your voice Comment Think of access tokens as authentication outside of passwords — they’re codes generated by platforms to keep you logged in so you don’t need to log in every time you visit a page. When hackers stole personal information on 29 million people on Facebook, they used access tokens to do it. The Fortnite vulnerability takes advantage of the many different ways you can log into your Epic Games account, using access tokens from Facebook, Google and Xbox accounts. The attacker would have to send the phishing link on the platform the victim logs into Fortnite from — so if you tied your Epic Games’ account to Facebook, the hack would have to go through the social network, said Eran Vaknin, a security researcher at Check Point.Once you click on the link, that data is extracted, even if the victim doesn’t type anything in. “The attack is happening automatically without any user interference,” Vaknin said. Because the compromised page had an Epic Games’ URL, it would appear less suspicious to victims, Vanunu said. It’s similar to a vulnerability that Check Point’s researchers discovered with accounts for DJI’s drones last March, which the company fixed in September. In that vulnerability, Vanunu was also able to inject malicious code on DJI’s own domain page to steal access tokens. “Even if you have a security product looking for anti-phishing, it wouldn’t catch it because it’s coming from a legitimate domain,” the security researcher said. He warned that as people become more aware of phishing attacks and more careful about typing passwords on suspicious pages, hackers would be targeting access tokens instead. Vanunu encouraged enabling two-factor authentication to protect your accounts — which Epic Games has made efforts to promote as well. “Token hijacking is something that is happening on all major platforms,” Vanunu said. “We are starting to see malicious attackers looking for tokens more.” Security: Stay up-to-date on the latest in breaches, hacks, fixes and all those cybersecurity issues that keep you up at night. Blockchain Decoded: CNET looks at the tech powering bitcoin — and soon, too, a myriad services that will change your life. 1 Security researchers found a vulnerability that hackers could use to take over Fortnite accounts. Epic Games Attention all epic Fortnite gamers: your accounts were in great danger. Security researchers from Check Point found vulnerabilities with Epic Games’ website, which allowed potential hackers to log into people’s Fortnite accounts without needing a password. Once they had access to the compromised accounts, the researchers found that you could listen in on friends’ conversations and use the victims’ credit card information to purchase in-game items. The researchers discovered the vulnerabilities in November, and it was fixed by January. “We were made aware of the vulnerabilities and they were soon addressed. We thank Check Point for bringing this to our attention. As always, we encourage players to protect their accounts by not reusing passwords and using strong passwords, and not sharing account information with others,” an Epic Games spokesperson said. Fortnite had a breakthrough year in 2018, with nearly 80 million players. Its parent company, Epic Games, was estimated to profit $3 billion last year, and valued at more than $15 billion for the free game. With the game’s massive popularity comes security concerns. In August, Epic Games fixed a security flaw with its installer for Android devices, after researchers from Google disclosed a vulnerability that could have tricked victims into installing a fake version of the game. Because the game is so popular, security researchers have found that Fortnite is a major target of malware, with a surge of fake apps popping up online. “We started to hear there was a lot of abuse at Fortnite’s network,” said Oded Vanunu, Check Point’s head of products vulnerability research. “This is more than a game — this is a huge infrastructure that’s serving 80 million players, who are mostly kids.” Epic Games has attempted to address security concerns by encouraging its players to enable two-factor authentication through giveaways. Despite Fortnite’s security measures over the last year, it was an Epic Games page from 2004 that created a small opening for hackers to take over people’s accounts. Check Point’s researchers found an unsecured URL from over a decade ago, on ut2004stats.epicgames.com — a records page for Unreal Tournament, a first-person shooter that Epic Games first developed in 1998. The page, which has since been deactivated, was open to cross-site scripting attacks — when someone injects malicious code into a website. The researchers wrote code and injected it onto the webpage to redirect access tokens to Check Point’s servers instead of Epic Game’s.
Debt-ridden auto component manufacturer Amtek Group is reportedly planning to sell its loss-making coffee chain Barista Coffee, as part of the group’s strategy to offload its non-core businesses. To sell the Italian coffee chain it acquired last year, Amtek may rope in consultancy firm Grant Thornton to scout for “potential buyers”, sources close to the development told The Economic Times. However, so far, Grant Thornton hasn’t received any “signed mandate” from Amtek to start the process, said the source.”The deal could also be structured in a way that the Arvind Dham-promoted Amtek Auto could liquidate about a third in Carnation Hospitality, which manages Amtek’s food business.”Recently, Dham had said that the group would sell non-core assets and exit non-auto businesses, after the company defaulted on its Rs 800 crore bond repayment.Barista Coffee sale not only highlights the liquidity issues faced by Amtek, but also the difficulties in making profits in the country’s coffee chain industry. Barista changed hands three times before it was sold to Amtek.Barista was bought by Rollatainers, a subsidiary of Amtek Group, from Italian coffee firm Lavazza Spa in a deal worth Rs 100 crore.Barista is the second largest coffee chain in India after Cafe Coffee Day, which recently got listed on the stock exchange. Barista has over 170 stores across the country, with most of them incurring losses.Starbucks and Costa Coffee are the other major players in the domestic coffee chain industry, which is projected to be worth Rs 1,400-crore.

At least nine people died after being crammed into a sweltering tractor-trailer found parked outside a Walmart in the midsummer Texas heat, authorities said Sunday in what they described as an immigrant-smuggling attempt gone wrong. The Latest on the deaths of 10 people whose bodies were found in a broiling tractor-trailer in a Walmart parking lot in San Antonio (all times local):6:30 p.m.Guatemalan diplomat Cristy Andrino says that among the 10 people who died after being found in the back of a tractor-trailer outside a Texas Walmart was a 19-year-old Guatemalan who had been deported and was on his way back to Maryland to rejoin his family.Andrino says Frank Guisseppe Fuentes’ fingerprints were in the system because he’d previously been deported. The diplomat says “that’s how they knew who the body belonged to so fast.”Andrino says Fuentes was born in Guatemala but immigrated to the United States as a child. His parents are in the U.S. illegally, and hadn’t yet given her instructions on what to do with the body. She says they may fear ICE agents could come after them if they claim the body.Houston immigration lawyer Jacob Monty says deportation would have barred Fuentes from re-entering the country legally. He says his case reflected “the kind of desperate, no-hope person that’s going to get into the back of a semi-truck.”___4:50 p.m.A congressman says a truck that carried dozens of immigrants, 10 of whom died, passed through a Border Patrol checkpoint around two hours before it was discovered in the parking lot of a San Antonio Walmart.U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar told The Associated Press on Tuesday that he had been informed by law enforcement that the truck driven by James Matthew Bradley Jr. cleared the Interstate 35 checkpoint north of Laredo around 10 p.m. Saturday. Police arrived at the Walmart parking lot at 12:23 a.m. Sunday.Cuellar said he didn’t know whether immigrants crossing into the United States illegally were loaded into the truck before or after it crossed the checkpoint. The station is 29 miles north of the border, along the interstate that links Laredo and San Antonio and is a primary north-south route in the United States. The station is equipped with license plate readers and dogs that sniff vehicles heading north.A Customs and Border Protection spokesman did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment.___4:30 p.m.An official with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement says investigators examining the deaths of 10 people found inside a broiling, packed tractor-trailer in San Antonio consider the driver to be just one member of a large “organization” behind the human smuggling operation.Shane Folden, special agent in charge of ICE’s Homeland Security Investigations office in San Antonio, told The Associated Press Tuesday that agents want to “dismantle the complete organization.” The immigrants were found Sunday inside a tractor-trailer at a Walmart in San Antonio.Folden says that could include money transfers, stash houses for immigrants smuggled across the U.S.-Mexico border, and other people involved in planning the operation.Trucker James Matthew Bradley Jr. faces a federal human smuggling charge that could carry the death penalty. Folden declined to say whether Bradley was cooperating with authorities.Agents have interviewed just five of the dozens of people on board the trailer. Twenty-two people are still hospitalized.___3:30 p.m.Federal regulators say they are investigating the troubled Iowa trucking company linked to the 10 deaths of immigrants found in one of its trailers in Texas. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration confirmed Tuesday that it is investigating Pyle Transportation. The agency says its findings will be shared with Department of Homeland Security investigators, who are conducting a criminal investigation into the immigrants’ deaths.Company owner Brian Pyle said Monday that he had no idea how dozens of immigrants became packed into a trailer with its name on it. He says the company had sold the trailer to an individual in Mexico, and an independent contractor was driving it to Brownsville, Texas, to carry out the sale. The Schaller, Iowa-based company has a history of safety and financial problems.___3 p.m.A Guatemalan diplomat says one survivor of the immigrant smuggling operation that claimed 10 lives told her Houston was the group’s final destination. That’s three hours from where the tractor-trailer stopped in a San Antonio Walmart parking lot.The diplomat said the teen hoped ultimately to reach New York. Another hospitalized Guatemalan, a 23-year-old, was bound for California.Cristy Andrino, Guatemala’s consul in McAllen, visited the 17-year-old Maya in the hospital. Andrino says the teen was in good spirits Tuesday and looking forward to reuniting with family. She said he was happy to learn he wouldn’t be deported because of his age. He spoke by phone with his mother and was showered with gifts from well-wishers.She says he other hospitalized Guatemalan is a material witness in the criminal case against the truck driver and may be able to apply for a special visa available to victims who cooperate with prosecutors.___2:30 p.m.The state of Florida had suspended commercial driving privileges for a truck driver three months before he was arrested for driving a tractor-trailer so hot and so crammed with immigrants that 10 people died.Alexis Bakofsky, a spokeswoman for the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, confirmed Tuesday that the agency disqualified 60-year-old James Matthew Bradley Jr.’s commercial driving privileges in April when he failed to file an updated medical card. Federal law requires commercial drivers supply the card to show they are physically fit for the road.Bradley’s driving record shows he was issued a commercial driver’s license in Florida in 2004. Bakofsky confirmed the Florida license was disqualified indefinitely. Bakofsky also says it would have been illegal for him to have held a second license from another state.Bradley faces charges of illegally transporting immigrants for financial gain resulting in death. The immigrants were found inside his truck at a Walmart in San Antonio.___2 p.m.Court records show that a long-haul truck driver charged in the deaths of 10 immigrants found inside his sweltering tractor-trailer in San Antonio had been cited repeatedly for violating federal motor carrier safety regulations in Iowa dating back to 1995.At least two of the tickets were for logging more hours than allowed.James Matthew Bradley Jr.’s most recent infraction came in April 2013. He was ticketed for violating a rule that bars truckers from driving longer than 14 hours without a break. The citation shows that he was driving for Pyle Transportation. He was fined $127.50.The records show Bradley also received tickets for violations of federal safety rules following stops or inspections in 2011, 2010 and 1995. They included a “maximum hours of service violation” for driving too much without rest in 2010.___12:15 a.m.A long-haul truck driver charged in the deaths of 10 immigrants found inside his sweltering tractor-trailer called his fiancee Sunday from a jail more than 1,000 miles from home and briefly described the gruesome events.Darnisha Rose says James Matthew Bradley Jr., who she called a generous person, claimed he had no idea how so many people came to be crammed inside his trailer in the Texas heat. The 60-year-old Bradley, a diabetic whose criminal history includes a conviction in a felony domestic violence case, told Rose that he’d stopped his truck at a San Antonio Walmart and went inside to use the bathroom. He claimed that when he returned to his truck, he noticed the trailer rocking back and forth. He said he’d heard nothing before that.___12:02 a.m.Mexico’s foreign ministry says 25 of the migrants found inside a sweltering tractor-trailer found parked outside a Texas Walmart were Mexican. In a statement Monday night, the ministry says that based on interviews by Mexican consulate personnel and contact with local authorities, “we can say that of the 10 people who lost their lives … four were of Mexican nationality.”The statement also says that of the 29 people hospitalized, 21 are Mexican. Also Monday, the man charged with driving the rig appeared in federal court in San Antonio.James Matthew Bradley Jr. faces charges of illegally transporting immigrants for financial gain, resulting in death. Free Workshop | August 28: Get Better Engagement and Build Trust With Customers Now Enroll Now for Free When we talk about the location of your ads, we don’t mean where they appear on each page. What we’re emphasizing here is that there are methods of setting up AdSense ads to appear on pages other than your own website pages. Increasing the variety of pages you put AdSense ads on can really boost your click-through rate. We’ll also tell you about the kind of website page on which to never let an AdSense ad appear.Extend your reach with AdLinks. When you sign up for AdSense, you also have the opportunity to display AdLinks. These are text links that take your visitor to a page of AdSense ads when clicked. The text links are related to the topics on your site, just like AdSense ads, but you get more of them and they might cover a wider range of relevant topics. If space on your site is limited, AdLinks are a terrific idea because they’re much more compact than AdSense ads. The downside is it takes two clicks (one on the text link and one on the resulting ad) before you make any money from them.Put AdSense ads in RSS feeds. If you have more than 100 subscribers to your RSS feed, you can apply to have AdSense ads appear whenever the feed is pulled by a news reader. The ads are matched by the content of the entire feed, not just the title and teaser. You need to put a snippet of code, provided by Google, into your feed, and the ads are then rendered when a reader downloads your feed. The text-based AdSense ad is converted to a graphic that remains stable even after it’s downloaded by the reader. (If the ad remained in text form, the news reader would detect a new article each time the ad changed and would reload it.)Use Web Search on your site. Putting a Google Web Search box on your site adds functionality for your visitors and potential ad revenue for you. When your site visitors search, Google places ads directly related to their search topics on the results page. This has two benefits for you: You keep traffic on your site longer because visitors don’t have to leave to do a Google search; and, of course, you make money when they click on one of the related ads.Keep your sales pages for your own sales. Do not place AdSense ads on any web page designed to sell your visitors your product. This includes your salesletter as well as any page on which they can make a purchase. You’ll make a lot more money by having your customers buy your product than by having them click away on an AdSense ad. Don’t mix the messages by giving them more than one thing to “buy.”Keep the AdSense ads on your content and news pages, add them to your newsletter archive pages, but don’t put them on your sales pages.Follow the MoneyThe amount of money you make from AdSense ads is partly determined by the value of the keywords in the ads–in other words, how much advertisers have paid to use those keywords. Try to attract the big-money ads to your site by generating content that includes those high-paying keywords.Find the expensive words… If you’ve signed up for Google’s AdWords program, then you already have some resources to help you determine the cost of different keywords. For the rest of us, a bit of detective work is necessary.Start with Google itself. Do a Google search using the keywords you want to use on your site. Pay attention to the wording of the ads that show up in the right margin–the ads at the top have the higher-paying words in them. You can piggyback on the ad revenue for those words by using them in your site’s content. You can also find the pricey keywords by tapping into keyword databases. Try these three:www.bestfreekeywords.comwww.factsaboutadsense.comwww.toppayingkeywords.com…But not at the expense of your credibility. It might be tempting to create all your content around certain high-paying keywords just to benefit from the click-through payments. However, your visitors are savvy enough to know when they’re being manipulated, and they won’t tolerate it.If your content ceases to be useful, relevant or interesting to them, they’ll stop coming to your site entirely. And you’ll have lost not only the high-paying click-throughs, but also the bigger money from product sales.Final ThoughtsThe only criteria Google has for ad placement is relevant content, so AdSense puts your site on an equal footing with much bigger, “more valuable” sites. It’s not your bank balance that competes with the big guys for ad revenue but the quality of your content.Google doesn’t actually reveal how much you can make from running AdSense ads on your site–and other site owners are restricted in how much information they can release to the public. Therefore, specific numbers are hard to predict. It’s safe to say, though, that with almost no effort it’s possible to bring in a little money, and if you apply yourself, it’s possible to make a bundle!Derek Gehl is Entrepreneur.com’s “E-Business” columnist and the CEO of the Internet Marketing Center, an internet marketing firm that has helped thousands of people learn to start and run their own online businesses. Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own. October 31, 2005 This hands-on workshop will give you the tools to authentically connect with an increasingly skeptical online audience. Want to make some quick money with almost no work? If you don’t already have AdSense ads on your site, you should think about getting started.Google’s AdSense places contextual ads on your web pages, and keywords defined by advertisers are matched to your site’s content by Google. You make money each time someone on your site clicks on one of the ads. You can set filters so your competitors’ ads aren’t displayed on your site, and you can restrict the ad content by region and language. This article will point out a few ways you can manage the ads on your website so they make you more money. We’ll talk about three key issues: ad design, ad location and keywords. You’ll be surprised to learn just how much control you have over these elements–and you’ll be delighted to see how much more money a few small changes can make you.Designing for DollarsYes, “content is king,” but good design is the crown jewel. Spend a few minutes getting the look of your AdSense ads right, and the payoff to you is priceless.Tweak the color. Make the ads blend into your content so they’ll be perceived by visitors to your site as supplementary or supporting information. Visitors are much more likely to click on links that look like part of the content they’re reading. You can change the color of the background and the color of the links to match those on your web pages. There are two ways to do this. One is a cinch: Use the pre-formatted colors that Google offers. The other requires a bit of HTML knowledge: Hand code the colors so you get an exact match to the ones on your site.As an alternative design plan, consider changing the colors from time to time to keep things fresh for returning visitors who might suffer from “ad blindness”–viewers often automatically filter out any content they’ve seen before.Align the images. Use images on your site as “captions” for the AdSense ads that appear. Now, of course, they won’t have a direct relationship to each ad because you don’t know exactly which ads will be placed on your page. The purpose of the images isn’t to explain the ads, but to draw the eye and then lead it down or across to the text. Since that text is your ad, the image has just increased the chances that the ad will be clicked. If you try this strategy, be aware that Google’s algorithm is always looking for ways to get your ads to make you more money, and that could mean it might override your default settings. If you’ve asked for a four-ad banner, but Google knows that three ads will make you more money because of its keywords, then the images you’ve carefully aligned for four ads will be out of whack.Run from the border! Unless… Borders separate the ads from the content. This visual separation works against your careful attempts to integrate the ads with the content. (Remember: Your goal is to integrate the ads as much as possible so they appear to be just one more valuable piece of relevant content on your site.)For that reason, you should not use any of the pre-set borders Google gives you.But if you use the “image caption” trick described above, Google requires that you use a border or a line separation between the images and the ads. The solution is to create your own line separation that’s consistent with other design elements on your page. Location, Location, Location! 8 min read
The BBC and Sky this week added their voices to the growing chorus of media organisations calling for action on BeoutQ, the high-profile piracy operation allegedly backed by Saudi Arabia as part of its campaign against neighbouring Qatar. The BBC and Sky called on the European Commission to take action against Saudi Arabia by petitioning the EU commissioner on trade, Anna Malmström.The two media heavyweights’ concern highlights just how significant a threat BeoutQ has become to media groups outside the region, undermining their ability to effectively license their content. BeoutQ’s pirate activity has spilled out of the Middle East and is having an impact in Europe itself. The BBC and Sky are adding their weight to a call for action that has already attracted the support of the English Premier League, one of the principal victims of BeoutQ’s piracy, the French football league, and Formula 1.BeIN Media has meanwhile launched an international investment arbitration action against the Kingdom, claiming damages to the tune of US$1 billion, not only because of the impact of BeoutQ’s piracy but because of the Saudi authorities’ wider campaign against its commercial interests. The relentless targeting of BeIN Media by such a provocatively branded service clearly suggests that BeoutQ’s assault is politically motivated, with the loss of earnings to western media outfits likely to be seen as acceptable collateral damage – particularly if they do deals with BeIN Media. The background to the battle between BeoutQ and BeIN Media encompasses more than the Saudi-led boycott of Qatar, however. Saudi Arabia has over the past year or so been highly active in developing its own media interests. The Kingdom, or members of the Saudi royal family, are believed to be the owners of the Dubai-based leading pan-Arab broadcaster MBC, which earlier this year unveiled plans to shift more of its focus towards Saudi Arabia in line with the “current transformational positive changes” taking place in the Kingdom under the leadership of the controversial Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, including growth in premium content production.MBC recently established an MBC Studios arm, based on existing assets, to provide content for Saudi as well as international audiences.Saudi Telecom (STC) meanwhile has launched, via IP video technology outfit Intigral, its own Middle East –focused OTT TV video platform, Jawwy TV. Made available in multiple countries across the region from the spring, it also signed up OTT TV provider Starz Play to make its content available via the Jawwy TV box and on multiple screens via the Jawwy app.All of this suggests that Saudi Arabia may have an ambition to create its own pay TV and OTT platform that can rival and surpass BeIN Media which, despite the boycott and attempts to restrict its activities not only in Saudi Arabia but elsewhere in the region, remains popular with many Saudis.BeoutQ meanwhile is an extreme manifestation of the challenges that have long bedeviled the development of pay TV in the region. The prevalence of piracy in all its forms, down to the illicit distribution of signals in housing complexes, something that is understood to be common in Saudi Arabia, contributes to the high licensing costs that legitimate players must bear, which in turn contribute to the high cost of legitimate services that fuels piracy.Despite the challenges facing premium video players in the region, the Middle East has seen the launch of multiple streaming services including Netflix and Iflix that complement and compete with existing pay TV providers. There is also a growing interest in local content, the development of which has taken a long time to come to gestation. BBC Studios recently established a partnership with BeIN to develop production as well as distribution of content in Qatar, while Netflix this year announced its first Arabic original, Jinn. just two examples of initiatives that are spouting up to foster local talent. All of these developments and issues, and the likely future direction of Middle East media, will be discussed in more detail in DTVE’s forthcoming MEA 2018 special issue.
